Energy Efficiency of Local Transport

In terms of efficiency, I've calculated the efficiency of various forms of transport in terms of their Kilo Joules per mile <- Yes, I was bored :)

  • Typical internal combustion engine car @ 30 mpg   = 5346 KJ/mile
  • Tesla Roadster Electric Vehicle @ 0.28 Kwh/mile  = 1008 KJ/mile
  • Cyclist @ 700 calories per hour = 195 KJ/mile
  • Walking @ 2.5 mph (256 cals per hr) = 306 KJ/mile
  • Swimming @ 700 calories per hour  = 1464 KJ/mile
  • London Tube @ avg 20mph = 214 KJ/per passenger/mile

Note: Transport for London claims "143 Watts/passenger km travelled" for tube travel. I assume they mean watt hours.
